What is Borobudur?

The Borobudur temple complex was built between AD 859 and 860 during the reign of King Rákóczi I (r. 814–846). It is located in Magelang Regency, Central Java, Indonesia.

The Borobudur Temple Complex is the largest Buddhist monument in Southeast Asia. It consists of three major temples and several smaller ones. The main temple is dedicated to the Buddha Vairocana. There are also two other large temples, each dedicated to a guardian deity.

The temple consists of three main parts: the central shrine, the mandala (principal Buddha image), and the stupa (repository).

 Borobudurs construction started in 764, and lasted until 814. The temple has become famous because of its unique architecture and design. The temple is also known for its intricate carvings and sculptures.

It was built around AD 805–825 and is considered the largest religious monument ever constructed in the world. The temple is believed to have been commissioned by King Kertanegara (r. 802–847), who ruled what is now central Java at the time.

 4. The temple covers about 1 square kilometre (0.38 sq mi).

 6. The outer ring contains the stupas, while the middle ring contains the prang, or spire.

 7. The innermost platform contains the vihara, or monastery.

 8. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

 9. The temple is dedicated primarily to the Mahayana school of Buddhism, although some parts of the complex date back to the Javanese Pagan Kingdom period.

 10. The temple is divided into two sections, the eastern section containing the viharas and the western section containing the stupa.

 11. The temple is surrounded by a moat, which was originally filled with water.

 12. The temple is enclosed by a wall, which is approximately 2 kilometres (1.25 miles) long.

 13. The temple is made entirely of locally quarried sandstone blocks without any mortar.

 14. The total height of the temple is 48 metres (157 ft).
